Stewartry Schools’ Athletics Champions!

Tuesday 28^thMay saw the resurrection of an annual schools’ athletics competition, the District Championships last held nearly 40 years ago.

Following discussion between representatives from each of the Stewartry Secondary Schools and the local Rotary Clubs a decision was taken to invite pupils from Castle Douglas High School, Dalbeattie High School, Dalry Secondary School and Kirkcudbright Academy to compete for the honour of lifting the Stewartry Schools’ Athletics Championship Shield. The competition being held at the new Athletics track at the Dalbeattie Learning Campus.

Each school was invited to enter a team of pupils, 3 boys and 3 girls from each age group across S1-3, to compete within a number of events within Track and Field Athletics. Points were awarded for each school finishing 1^st– 4^thwith the team gaining the most points being awarded the Rotary Shield. There were also individual medals available for pupils finishing 1^st– 3^rdin each individual event, including opportunities for Senior pupils to compete.

Perfect conditions led to some excellent performances with each winning performance setting a championship record for pupils to aspire to in future years. Following a full morning of competition the destination of the shield was still up for grabs with Castle Douglas , Dalbeattie and Kirkcudbright all still in contention with only 10 points separating the three schools. With only the mixed relays to be contested in the afternoon session, and double points available any one of the three schools were in a position to be crowned champions. In fact the destination was not decided until the results of the final race were known.

Congratulations to the team from Kirkcudbright Academy who triumphed in the end and were awarded the Rotary Shield.
