Maths Week 2019

This year, Kirkcudbright Academy wanted to encourage as many other departments to support this year Maths Week as possible. In maths, we provided every S1, S2 and S3 class a challenging problem for the end of each lesson so they could use their knowledge and problem solving skills in new ways. One S3 class took part in the Scottish “Maths Wi Nae Borders” competition, working in teams and coming together to vote for the best class solutions.  Other departments in the school supported this initiative by doing the following:

  • English- Graphs are used to show the rise in tension in a novel as well as timelines to sequence events.
  • French/Spanish- using language to count.
  • Biology- Data handling and calculations.
  • Technical- Measuring correctly, using and reading scales.
  • Home Economics- Weighing and measuring and costing in recipes.
  • Art- Proportion and symmetry, using scale and perspective in drawing and understanding shape.
  • Chemistry- Chemical formulae and calculating results with them. Manipulating formulae using algebra skills.
  • PE- working out average speed, pulse rates, success in performances and numbers in action.
  • Computing- working with binary numbers.
  • Business- Using spreadsheets and formulae.
