Pupil Support

Support for Learning

If students have difficulty with organisation or study skills, they may have one-off or ongoing lessons with our qualified Support for Learning team in order to develop confidence and improve their approach to learning.

We support students with a range of Additional Support Needs through small group sessions and other individual arrangements. Students are assessed by out visiting Educational Psychologist after a need for access arrangements has been confirmed by teachers and the Head of Departments. We can also arrange for students to be assessed for dyslexia and other specific learning difficulties at any stage of their school career.

Students who have been identified as requiring additional support needs will be further assessed to establish what ‘Additional Assessment Arrangements’ they would benefit from when supporting them through their exam period.

Ms McNaught (Principal Teacher)

After graduating from university with an Honours Degree in Sociology Ms McNaught completed a Post Graduate Certificate in Primary Teaching. She taught in Ayrshire for six years before moving to Dumfries and Galloway. She continued teaching in primary for a couple of years before taking on the post of Teacher of Additional Support for Learning at the Academy. Whilst teaching at the Academy Ms McNaught completed her Post Graduate Certificate in Inclusive Education and is now in her final year of an M.Sc. Enhanced Practice in Education.

Ms McNaught has been supporting pupils to reach their potential at the Academy for eight years. In that time, she has broadened her remit to include pupil support teacher and class teacher of the Child Care course. Latterly, Ms McNaught has also taken on the role of Acting Principal Teacher of Additional Support for Learning.

Ms McNaught is a competitive horse rider and can also be seen out competing with her son in the lead rein classes. When not in the saddle, she will undoubtedly be seen with either a dog or in a pair of running trainers.

Mrs Hall

My name is Mrs Hall, I am an Additional Support for Learning Teacher at Kirkcudbright Academy. I have many years experience as a Primary teacher before furthering my skills in Additional Support for Learning. My role is varied allowing me to support pupils in overcoming potential barriers to learning. I enjoy the relationships that I am able to build with pupils and value sharing the experiences. In my spare time, I enjoy spending time with my family, walking my dogs, horse riding, running with friends, coffee and chats!
